How BestPetsCo Researches and Compares Products

BestPetsCo uses a research-and-comparison process. Most current guides do not represent hands-on laboratory or long-term household tests, so the site does not use test language unless a page documents an actual method.
1. Define the use case
We start with the pet, owner and problem the guide is meant to help: for example, a strong chewer that destroys seams, a small dog that needs a lightweight harness, or a cat that resists monthly handling. A product can be a useful pick for one use case and a poor fit for another.
2. Check primary product information
We review current manufacturer specifications, directions, materials, size or weight ranges, care instructions, warnings and warranties. For regulated flea, tick or veterinary products, the label and applicable FDA or EPA information matter more than promotional copy.
3. Compare category-specific factors
- Toys: material, geometry, size, chew style, replace-when-damaged guidance and choking or dental trade-offs.
- Harnesses: size chart, adjustment points, leash attachment, escape resistance, padding and range of motion.
- Beds: foam construction, dimensions, entry height, cover care, warranty and replacement parts.
- Trackers: network type, subscription, battery claims, waterproof rating, device size and app requirements.
- Health-related products: species, age and weight limits, active ingredients, label directions and circumstances that require veterinary advice.
4. Use owner feedback carefully
Recurring owner reports can identify issues worth investigating, such as sizing confusion, weak seams, battery complaints or difficult cleaning. They are subjective and can be biased, so they are not treated as clinical evidence, a durability guarantee or proof that every unit performs the same way.
5. Explain the shortlist
A first pick should offer a practical balance for the page's stated use case. Alternatives are included when a different budget, body shape, material preference, medical history or routine changes the better choice. “Best” means best fit under those stated criteria, not universally safest or guaranteed to work.
Why we do not assign unexplained star scores
Product order is not a measurement. Without a documented scale and supporting results, a five-star score would suggest precision we cannot justify. Comparisons instead show intended use, specifications, limitations and the checks a shopper should make. Manufacturer claims are identified as such, not presented as BestPetsCo test results.

We update a guide's modification date when its content is substantively revised, not simply to make it look fresh.
What we do not automatically verify
