A flea collar is a long-term treatment choice, not an automatic solution for every itchy dog.
Compare the exact U.S. label, your dog's age and size, swimming habits, and current medications before buying.
Scratching has several possible causes. A flea comb and veterinary assessment can help distinguish fleas from another skin problem. If your dog is already using a topical, tablet or medicated shampoo, ask your veterinarian about compatibility before adding a pesticide collar.

A longer advertised interval does not prove a product is safer or a better match. Compare the number of months your dog can actually use it under the label's water-exposure and replacement conditions, not just the number on the front of the box.
Which differences matter for your dog?
- Frequent swimming: Seresto's manufacturer shortens its flea protection claim to five months and tick protection to seven months for dogs swimming once a month or more. Its eight-month conditions also limit bathing to once monthly.
- A young puppy: The minimum age differs: Seresto's dog label starts at seven weeks, while the listed Adams Plus, Hartz UltraGuard Pro and TevraPet collar labels start at twelve weeks.
- A two-pack: Count the interval for one collar and keep the unused collar sealed as directed. Two collars are a supply quantity, not a reason to put two on one dog.
- A cat in the household: Never put a dog-only collar on a cat. Discuss grooming, close contact and other pet exposures with your veterinarian using the exact product label.
Fitting, checks and reactions
Use the adjustment, trimming and disposal directions on that collar's package; there is no single fit instruction that replaces every label. Check the neck and fit regularly, especially on a growing puppy. Keep children from playing with collars and prevent pets from chewing or swallowing them. A pesticide collar is not a leash attachment.
If irritation or unusual symptoms appear after application, remove the collar and contact your veterinarian promptly. Tremors, marked weakness, repeated vomiting, breathing problems or seizures need urgent veterinary help. Keep the package and lot number. Do not immediately substitute another pesticide while a reaction is being assessed.
Why visible fleas can continue after fitting
Onset and maximum-effect claims are product-specific. For example, TevraPet's current master label says maximum effectiveness may take two to three weeks. That is not permission to leave a sick or severely itchy dog untreated; ask a veterinarian for a suitable plan. Vacuum resting areas, wash bedding as its care label allows, and ensure each household pet has a species-appropriate plan. Do not add extra insecticides to the pet to accelerate the process.
Making the final choice
Choose a collar only when its eligibility, parasite coverage and practical restrictions fit your dog. Seresto is a long-duration option to discuss; Adams Plus, Hartz and TevraPet have different ingredients or fitting conditions, not lower clinical scores. The unidentified Adams two-pack requires a current label check before it can be compared responsibly.
